How do you charge your e-bike or e-scooter?

Tips for safely
charging your battery.

What should you pay attention to?

There’s a lot you can do yourself! Discover the three most important tips for properly charging your battery.

Tip 5

Do you use your battery infrequently? Make sure to recharge it at least every three months. A battery discharges slowly over time and may become damaged if left empty for too long.

When a battery is not used for a while, it gradually loses its charge — a process called self-discharge. If the charge becomes too low, the charger may no longer receive a signal from the battery to start charging. In addition, the cells that store the energy can become damaged if they discharge too deeply. You wouldn’t want to buy a new battery simply because your bike hasn’t been used for a while. To avoid this, recharge your battery at least every three months. As a reminder, you could, for example, do this on the first Monday of every month.

Tip 6

Use only the supplied or recommended charger. Imitation chargers can damage your battery, even if they appear to have the same specifications.

Using an arbitrary charger to power your battery can cause serious damage. The supplied charger is specifically designed for your battery and ensures optimal performance. Imitation or generic chargers may look similar but can harm your battery, even if their specifications seem identical. If you need a replacement, consult your BOVAG bicycle specialist or contact the manufacturer of your e-bike or e-scooter for proper advice.

Tip 7

Disconnect your battery from the charger once it is fully charged (100%). This helps extend the battery’s lifespan.

Leaving your e-bike or e-scooter battery connected to the power supply after it’s fully charged can accelerate its aging process — something you’ll want to avoid. It also wastes electricity. To preserve your battery’s lifespan, disconnect it from the charger when it reaches 100% (unless the manufacturer provides different instructions).
